How did Graduate Hospital earn its name?
Originally named Southwest Center City, Graduate Hospital has become the name of choice for the area in recent years, earning its name for the medical facility located on the northern edge of the neighborhood. The medical facility was first opened in 1916 and repurposed by Penn Medicine in 2007 as a rehabilitation and long-term acute-care facility.

Located on the Western edge of Graduate Hospital, Devil’s Pocket earned its name decades ago when a local priest said that the neighborhood children were so bad they would steal out of the devil’s pocket. The general area of the neighborhood is South of Lombard Street and North of Washington Avenue from 27th Street to the Schuylkill River.
Also located in Graduate Hospital is the popular Toll Brothers development know as Naval Square, the former site of a Navy Hospital. Bordering Bainbridge Street to the North and Grays Ferry Avenue to its East, Naval Square is nestled in the Northwest section of Graduate Hospital.
